SMS Defence Solutions teamed with Syntonic Technologies
to further develop the 4148 lightweight rapid tracking mobile communications antenna.
The 4148 provides directional control and tracking capability that are substantially independent
of the orientation of the antenna, making it ideal for mobile satellite communications applications
where it is difficult or expensive to provide a stable operating platform, or where a
small/low profile antenna is required.
Initially conceived to expand the potential of the global coverage provided by spot and main beam
technology, the 4148 design is able to be adapted to any operational frequency from 200MHz to 30GHz
and beyond.
Below is a schematic showing the dimensions of an existing prototype designed for recreational
off-road vehicles that has been successfully tested at speed over rough roads using commercial
satellite voice and 64kb ISDN services operating at L-band frequencies.

L-Band Prototype
Applications
The 4148 used in conjunction with commercially available terminal equipment operating over existing
commercial satellite services can be developed to support the following voice and high bandwidth data
services, including live video monitoring and video conferencing:
- handheld and transportable terminals
- vehicle-mounted terminals that retain connectivity even when traversing rough terrain
- maritime applications where the vessel superstructure is unable (for reasons such as weight,
lack of stability or space) to support existing directional antennas
- light and corporate aircraft
The current prototype is suitable for vehicle-mounted use on graded roads. Depending on
the operational characteristics of the satellite service, the tracking mechanism may need
to be augmented by motion and/or attitude sensors for rough terrain, maritime or aeronautical use.
